In 2006, Mexico City legalized civil unions. Now, moving forward, the city government has approved a bill that will define marriage as a “free union between two people.” The law will also allow same-sex couples to adopt children just the same as their straight counterparts.
The left leaning legislature approved the bill 39 to 20 after staunch debate and pushing aside the wishes of the Roman Catholic Church. It was also met with opposition from the National Action Party of President Felipe Calderon; a G.W. Bush friend and supporter. Although Mayor Marcelo Ebrard must sign the bill for it to become law, he is fully expected to do so.
While Uruguay was the first country in Latin America to adopt civil unions, Mexico will be the first country that recognizes same-sex marriages.

It's pretty sad that Mexico City is more progressive than New York, isn't it?
