The District of Columbia Board of Elections and Ethics has set a date of February 16, 2010 to begin hearing arguments for and against limiting marriage in Washington, DC to between one man and one woman.
This is the second attempt by DC resident Joyce Little to stop gay marriage in the city. Little identifies herself as a Christian, thinks homosexuality is an “abomination” and thinks that gay marriage will hurt they cities poor.
The good news is that this same DC board ruled that when it comes to gay marriage, the majority cannot vote on the rights of the minority. That ruling meant that even with the passage of gay marriage in DC, anti-gay marriage groups cannot turn around and try to force a vote on the matter like they did in California, which led to Proposition 8. Having said that, there are multiple attacks against gay marriage in DC going on right now, so it’s too early to say if the law will stick. There is still the threat that a court will rule that citizens have a right to vote on the issue.

The correct hearing date is Feb. 16, 2010, not Feb. 16, 2009. Happy New Year!
Thank you for catching that! I will make the change now. Such errors should end in the next few weeks as we get used to 2010.
