A report by the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) released on December 17th found that extending federal benefits to same-sex couples will cost taxpayers $898 million over the next nine years.
The report found that the House’s version of H.R. 2517, the Domestic Partnership Benefits and Obligations Act, would cost $596 million in direct spending and $302 million in discretionary spending through 2019.
Of that cost, extending health insurance to same-sex partners would cost the most; $590 million in direct spending and $266 million in discretionary spending. The CBO also said that enacting the legislation “would not have any direct impact on federal revenues.”
President Obama has said that he supports the bill.
