Correction: There is still one more vote that it needs to pass later this month, but they are saying that gay marriage in DC is almost certain to become reality. We apologize for the error.
Gay marriage is now legal in the nation’s capital — the District of Columbia — thanks to a 11 to 2 vote today by the City Council.
The City Council has already rejected a petition to put the banning of gay marriage up to vote. Simply, they believe that the majority should not have the option of voting away the rights of the minority. This means that a Prop 8-like situation cannot pop up where gay marriage is legal one day and illegal the next.
Congress can step in and override the City Council and that is the only way gay marriage could not become a reality in DC. It is not expected that Congress will step in because they did not step in when DC voted to recognize gay marriages performed in other states. Many political analysts feel that it is too sticky of an issue for Congress to get involved in.
Score one for the gays!

That is awesome news! Now the rest of the nation needs to catch up!
a great day, a great day.
I am curious to see how the NY thing is going to shake out, too.
@Colin: agreed. it cannot happen soon enough
@Spark: As far as I know, there is no word on NY yet.
Colin and Spark:
Indeed, we are still awaiting word on NY. The rumor mill is still saying that a vote will likely take place today.
I’m not sure if we’ll be able to break the news here when/if it happens (other commitments), but we will update as soon as we can once we get word.
