Gay marriage advocates are going to be paying close attention to the vote on gay marriage in Washington DC on Tuesday.  City Council members have remained largely united on passing the issue and it is expected to breeze through the session with a 10 to 2 vote.

Even if it passes, Congress, which has jurisdiction over Washington DC, may step in and invalidate the law.  This, however, seems unlikely as they have remained mum on the issue and did not step in when DC passed a law that approved gay-marriage recognition back in the spring.  It is imagined by many that with all of the controversy that Congress deals with on their own issues that they do not want anything else on their plate.

Here’s to hoping it passes!  The DC government has already made it clear that they will not let a measure to ban gay marriage onto the ballot.  As we understand it, if the city council approves it and Congress doesn’t invalidate it, citizens cannot come back and demand that the issue go to ballot because those in charge in DC feel that such a vote would be unconstitutional.

Go DC!  My partner and I live 30 minutes outside of DC and have been discussing a possible move if gay marriage becomes recognized in the city.  I imagine that passage will provide a nice little population boost to the city and leave surrounding states with a few missing residents.
