Last week Gay Vantage reported on a bill introduced Rep. Alcee Hastings that would provide immunity to military members that testify before Congress on the military’s Don’t Ask Don’t Tell policy.
Twenty seven members of congress have co-sponsored the bill but the list does not include Barney Frank, Tammy Baldwin or Jared Polis, all Democrats and the only openly gay members of Congress.
Bay Windows, a GLBT publication in New England reports on Barney Frank response:
For one thing, he notes, “we have plenty of people who have already been thrown out” to testify. And for another, he says it would set a bad precedent of allowing members of the military to go before Congress and disagree with their commanding officers on military policies. ”It’s a mistake to start setting exceptions,” said Frank.
Why wouldn’t the openly gay members of Congress support this bill on behalf of the community? The actual bill is included below … what’s so wrong with this bill that they wouldn’t stand up for the gay community and endorse it?
Please contact Reps. Barney Frank, Tammy Baldwin and Jared Polis to demand their support of this bill! They may need a gentle reminder that they are also a part of the minority group that is being discriminated against.
